Jasper Johnson used his dad’s jersey that was gifted from Bill Keightley to announce UK commitment
Jasper Johnson’s commitment ceremony was a special and unique event for a number of reasons.
One that particularly caught the eye of many watching the ceremony was the way Johnson announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky.
Johnson was handed a Donatos pizza box, and after opening the box, revealed a Kentucky jersey inside. The #30 jersey with the name Johnson on the back was intriguing, as it was a throwback uniform, leaving many to wonder why he used that jersey for the ceremony.
It turns out to be a really cool story.
According to Kentucky Sports Radio’s Nick Roush, the jersey was given to Jasper’s father, Dennis, who many remember as a standout football player in Lexington. Dennis received the jersey from Bill Keightley, the longtime UK equipment manager.
The jersey Jasper pulled out of the Donatos box is the Johnson jersey his Dad received from Bill Keightley.
Dennis Johnson initially planned on playing football and basketball at UK, but Hal Mumme nixed his shot to play for Tubby Smith.

Dennis was a three-sport star at Harrodsburg High School, playing football and basketball while also competing in track & field. He planned to play both football and basketball at the University of Kentucky, but that idea was reportedly nixed by them-Kentucky football head coach Hal Mumme.
The Donatos box was certainly an interesting part of the ceremony, but being able to use his dad’s jersey that was gifted from the believed Keightley was a very cool way for Jasper to announce he plans to attend his father’s alma mater and his home-state school.
