Lakers to have No. 44 band on uniforms in Jerry West’s honor

The Los Angeles Lakers are paying tribute to a legend by adding a commemorative No. 44 band to their uniforms for the upcoming season in honor of Hall of Famer Jerry West. West, whose iconic silhouette serves as the NBA’s logo, is one of the most influential figures in the history of the franchise and the league. This recognition comes as a celebration of West’s legacy, both as a player and executive, in shaping the Lakers into one of the most successful teams in basketball history.

Jerry West donned the No. 44 jersey throughout his illustrious 14-season career with the Lakers, from 1960 to 1974. Known for his scoring ability, leadership, and clutch performances, West was a 14-time NBA All-Star, a 10-time All-NBA First Team selection, and a five-time member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team. He led the Lakers to nine NBA Finals appearances and helped secure the franchise’s first title in Los Angeles in 1972. His contributions earned him a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980, cementing his place among the sport’s all-time greats.

The No. 44 tribute on the Lakers’ uniforms comes at a time when the team continues to reflect on its storied history. Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss expressed her gratitude for West’s impact on the franchise, stating, “Jerry West’s legacy goes beyond the court. His influence on this organization is profound, and we are proud to honor him in this meaningful way.”

West’s connection to the Lakers didn’t end with his playing career. After retiring, he transitioned to the front office and became one of the most respected executives in NBA history. As general manager, he was instrumental in constructing the Lakers’ championship-winning teams of the 1980s and early 2000s, including the acquisition of players like Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. His influence as an architect of successful teams extended beyond Los Angeles, as he later played key roles in shaping the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers into contenders.

For the Lakers, adding the No. 44 to their uniforms is a symbolic gesture of appreciation for West’s decades-long contributions. It serves as a reminder of the lasting impact he has had on the franchise and the game of basketball. The tribute is expected to resonate deeply with Lakers fans and the basketball community, keeping West’s legacy alive for generations to come.
