Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has reportedly informed the team’s front office that he wants to play alongside another big man more frequently, according to a report from ESPN. Davis, who has primarily been utilized as a center in recent seasons, is seeking to shift back to his more natural power forward position, where he feels more comfortable and effective.
The 6-foot-10 forward/center has thrived when paired with a traditional center in the past. During the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, Davis played alongside Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee, allowing him to focus more on defense and scoring, while avoiding the physical toll of guarding opposing centers for extended periods. This dual-big approach allowed Davis to roam the paint and disrupt opponents on defense while stretching the floor on offense.
However, in recent years, due to roster changes and injuries, Davis has often been forced into the center role, which he reportedly finds physically demanding and less favorable to his style of play. By adding another big man to the lineup, Davis believes he can extend his longevity and maximize his impact on both ends of the court.
Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka has already made several roster moves this offseason to address the team’s frontcourt depth, bringing in players like Jaxson Hayes, who could potentially fill the role of a traditional center next to Davis. The team’s goal is to build a more versatile lineup that can better support their superstar, especially as they aim for a deep playoff run.
As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how the Lakers plan to accommodate Davis’ request and reshape their on-court strategy accordingly.
