During an interview with Men in Blazers, Mauricio Pochettino said the USMNT players need to play with arrogance, the “right” arrogance, like other American athletes in different sports.
“We need to change the mentality. We need to see the women’s team, we need to see other athletes produced in this country,” Pochettino said.
“We also need to produce soccer players with that mentality. The arrogance, the right arrogance.”
“There are two types of arrogance. When you’re too arrogant, you don’t respect your teammates or opponents.”
“But if you have the right arrogance, if you’re confident in yourself, you’re sure that you’re going to perform and you’re sure about your quality.”
“You will think my teammate is behind me, and he’s going to defend me if we’re going to fight.”
“If you really feel that and create that, it’s possible. Because talent? We have the talent.”
“The culture of USA, we can’t change it. I can’t change you and you can’t change me, I’m Argentinian. But I think we can improve in the way we approach things.”
“I think the culture is amazing. The culture that the country has, and the people and the mentality is amazing. The only thing is we need to be more responsible about the sport we are playing.”
“We need to be more proud about us and feel that we have more capacity. And we need to be strong. Go and fight for ourselves.”
