Dr. Michael T. Benson Named 27th President of West Virginia University

Morgantown, WV – West Virginia University (WVU) has announced that Dr. Michael T. Benson will serve as its 27th president, beginning his tenure in July 2025. Benson, a seasoned leader in higher education with a distinguished career spanning multiple institutions, will take the helm at a pivotal time for the university.

The WVU Board of Governors unanimously approved Benson’s appointment, citing his extensive experience in university leadership, fundraising, and academic development as key factors in their decision. He succeeds Dr. E. Gordon Gee, who has led the university through significant challenges and transformations over the past decade.

In a statement, Benson expressed his enthusiasm for joining WVU and embracing the Mountaineer spirit. “It is an incredible honor to be selected as the next president of West Virginia University,” he said. “WVU has a rich tradition of academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students, and alumni to continue building on this strong foundation.”

Benson brings a wealth of experience to Morgantown. He most recently served as the president of Coastal Carolina University and previously led Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Southern Utah University, and Snow College in Utah. His leadership has been marked by a commitment to student success, institutional growth, and financial stewardship.

During his tenure at EKU, Benson oversaw record-setting fundraising efforts, the construction of new academic and student facilities, and an emphasis on expanding access to higher education. His ability to navigate financial challenges while prioritizing student outcomes was a key factor in WVU’s decision to bring him on board.

“Dr. Benson’s proven leadership in higher education, along with his deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing universities today, makes him an ideal fit for WVU,” said WVU Board of Governors Chair Taunja Willis-Miller. “His vision and experience will help guide our university into the future.”

Benson’s appointment comes at a critical time for WVU, which has faced financial restructuring and strategic realignments in recent years. The university has worked to address budget deficits while maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and research innovation. His experience in institutional transformation and strategic planning is expected to be instrumental in guiding WVU through these challenges.

Students, faculty, and alumni have expressed optimism about Benson’s leadership. Many see his background in higher education administration as a strong asset that will help WVU remain competitive both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Benson holds a doctorate in history from the University of Oxford and a master’s degree in nonprofit administration from the University of Notre Dame. He is known for his commitment to public service and has been an advocate for accessible and affordable higher education throughout his career.

As Benson prepares to take on his new role, he has emphasized his desire to engage with the WVU community and listen to the needs of students and faculty. “WVU’s best days are ahead, and I am eager to be part of this journey,” he said.

With his leadership set to begin in July, the university community is looking forward to a new era under Dr. Michael T. Benson’s guidance.
