RICK BARNES STEPS DOWN AS TENNESSEE VOLS MEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH, KIM CLEVELAND TAKES THE REINS

Knoxville, TN – In a surprise move, Rick Barnes, the longtime head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team, announced his resignation today, effective immediately. Barnes, 70, had been at the helm of the Vols program since 2015, leading the team to several successful seasons and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.

“I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach at the University of Tennessee for the past eight years,” Barnes said in a statement. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, and I’m grateful to the players, coaches, and staff who have worked tirelessly to make our program successful. However, I feel that it’s time for me to step aside and allow someone else to take the reins.”

Barnes’ resignation comes as a surprise to many in the college basketball world, as he had shown no signs of slowing down despite his advanced age. However, sources close to the program indicate that Barnes had been considering retirement for some time and felt that now was the right moment to make the transition.

As Barnes departs, the Vols have wasted no time in naming his replacement. Kim Cleveland, the highly successful head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols women’s basketball team, has been tapped to take over the men’s program. Cleveland, who has led the Lady Vols to several conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in the country.

“I’m honored to have been given the opportunity to lead the Tennessee men’s basketball program,” Cleveland said. “I’m excited to work with our talented players and staff to build on the success that Coach Barnes has established. My goal is to take this program to even greater heights and make our fans proud.”

Cleveland’s appointment is seen as a bold move by the Vols, as she becomes one of the first female head coaches in men’s Division I basketball. However, those who know her say that she is more than up to the challenge.

“Kim is an outstanding coach who has proven herself time and time again,” said Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White. “She has a deep understanding of the game, and her ability to motivate and inspire her players is unmatched. I have no doubt that she will be a huge success as our men’s basketball coach.”

As Cleveland takes the reins, she has set her sights on achieving a remarkable milestone – 200 wins. With her proven track record of success and her ability to adapt to new challenges, many believe that she has what it takes to reach this lofty goal.

“I’m excited to get started and see what we can accomplish,” Cleveland said. “200 wins is a lofty goal, but I believe that we have the talent and the dedication to make it happen. I’m looking forward to the challenge and to making our fans proud.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR KIM CLEVELAND AND THE TENNESSEE VOLS?

– Cleveland will hit the ground running, meeting with players and staff to begin building her team.
