Kentucky finishes the season No. 12 in the AP Poll, a 6-spot jump from where they were before the NCAA Tournament.

The Kentucky Wildcats have concluded the 2024-25 men’s basketball season ranked No. 12 in the final Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll, marking a six-spot improvement from their pre-NCAA Tournament position at No. 18.

Under the leadership of first-year head coach Mark Pope, the Wildcats began the season ranked No. 23 in both the AP and Coaches Polls. Throughout the season, the team demonstrated resilience and growth, culminating in a strong showing during the NCAA Tournament.

Entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Region, Kentucky faced No. 14 seed Troy in the first round, securing a decisive victory. In the Round of 32, the Wildcats achieved a historic 84-75 win over No. 6 seed Illinois, a game in which they were considered underdogs.

This victory propelled them to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019.

In the Sweet 16, Kentucky faced a formidable opponent in No. 2 seed Tennessee. Despite a valiant effort, the Wildcats fell 78-65, concluding their tournament run.

The Wildcats’ performance in the NCAA Tournament significantly influenced their rise in the final AP rankings. Their No. 12 finish in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll reflect the team’s progress and resilience throughout the season.

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) showcased its strength during the season, with Florida clinching the national title and securing the No. 1 spot in the final AP poll. Tennessee and Alabama also finished in the top six, highlighting the competitive nature of the conference.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Pope expressed pride in his team’s development and accomplishments. “This group has shown tremendous growth and determination. Their hard work has laid a solid foundation for the future of Kentucky basketball,” he stated.

The team’s upward trajectory in the rankings serves as a testament to their perseverance and the promising direction under Coach Pope’s leadership.
