The University of Kentucky has secured a significant addition to its football program with the commitment of running back Seth McGowan, a former four-star recruit with experience at Oklahoma and New Mexico State.
McGowan’s journey to Kentucky has been marked by both promise and adversity. After a standout freshman season at Oklahoma in 2020, where he rushed for 370 yards and four touchdowns, his career was derailed by legal issues leading to his dismissal from the program. He spent time away from Division I football before rebuilding his career at Texas College and Butler Community College. In 2024, he excelled at New Mexico State, rushing for 813 yards and catching 23 passes, showcasing his versatility and resilience.
McGowan’s decision to transfer to Kentucky reunites him with running backs coach Jay Boulware, who initially recruited him to Oklahoma. Additionally, he joins former New Mexico State teammate Shiyazh Pete, now Kentucky’s starting left tackle, adding familiarity to his new environment.
With only four scholarship running backs on the roster after spring practice, McGowan’s addition provides much-needed depth and experience to Kentucky’s backfield. His combination of power, speed, and pass-catching ability positions him as a valuable asset for the Wildcats as they prepare for the upcoming season.
As McGowan embarks on this new chapter, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a determination to make the most of his opportunity in the SEC. His journey reflects a story of redemption and perseverance, and Kentucky fans will be eager to see his impact on the field.
