BATON ROUGE, La. – In a move that resonates deeply with LSU Tigers fans and the women’s basketball community, Seimone Augustus has returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach for the LSU women’s basketball team. Head coach Kim Mulkey announced the appointment on May 20, 2024, marking a significant homecoming for one of the program’s most iconic figures.
Augustus, a Baton Rouge native, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in LSU history. During her collegiate career from 2002 to 2006, she led the Tigers to three consecutive Final Four appearances and earned numerous accolades, including two National Player of the Year awards. Her impact on the program was so profound that she became the first female LSU athlete to have her jersey retired and, in 2023, the first to be honored with a statue on campus.
Following her stellar college career, Augustus was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. She enjoyed a 15-year professional career, highlighted by four WNBA championships, eight All-Star selections, and three Olympic gold medals with Team USA. After retiring as a player in 2021, she transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks.
Her return to LSU fills the vacancy left by the retirement of assistant coach Johnny Derrick. Augustus expressed her enthusiasm about rejoining the program, stating, “Life always guides you to where you belong. Thus, my path has led me home.” She emphasized her eagerness to contribute to the team’s success and to mentor the next generation of athletes.
Coach Mulkey highlighted the significance of Augustus’s return, noting, “As a player at LSU, Seimone helped transform the program as the best player in the nation. She brought LSU to national prominence. She will be a tremendous member on our staff as someone with great experience who has excelled at every level of the game.”
Augustus’s appointment comes at a time when LSU women’s basketball is experiencing a resurgence under Coach Mulkey’s leadership, including a national championship win in 2023. Her presence on the coaching staff is expected to further elevate the program’s stature and inspire current players.
In addition to her coaching duties, Augustus continues to receive recognition for her contributions to the sport. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in April 2024 and is set to be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame later this year.
As Augustus embarks on this new chapter of her career, her return to LSU symbolizes a full-circle moment, blending her rich legacy with the program’s promising future.
