In a significant move for the Kentucky Wildcats, former Florida Gators guard Denzel Aberdeen has committed to transfer to Kentucky, bringing his championship experience and versatile skill set to Lexington. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound senior made the announcement shortly after entering the transfer portal, solidifying Kentucky’s roster for the upcoming 2025–26 season.

Aberdeen’s decision was influenced by a pivotal Zoom call with Kentucky head coach Mark Pope and his staff. The conversation, which extended into the early hours of the morning, left a lasting impression on Aberdeen, who described it as a “life-changing” experience. The coaching staff’s vision and approach resonated with him, leading to his commitment just a day later.

During his tenure at Florida, Aberdeen played a crucial role in the Gators’ national championship run. In the 2024–25 season, he averaged 7.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, shooting 41.8% from the field and 35% from three-point range. His performance in high-pressure situations, including a seven-point contribution in the national championship game against Houston, showcased his ability to deliver when it matters most.

Coach Pope praised Aberdeen, stating, “Denzel is a winner in every sense of the word. He has won at every level of basketball, and that’s all that he talks about. Zel is a great young man who works for everything he earns. He’s a three-level scorer and a rangy defender who has tremendous length.”

Aberdeen’s addition fills the Wildcats’ 13th scholarship spot, assuming no changes with NBA Draft prospects or potential transfers. His commitment also led to the cancellation of a planned visit from Kansas transfer Rylan Griffen and the end of Kentucky’s pursuit of Bosnian guard Harun Zrno.

The Orlando native’s decision to join Kentucky fulfills a long-held dream. According to his father, Ian, “That has been Denzel’s dream school from day one when he started basketball.”

With Aberdeen’s commitment, Kentucky’s roster is now complete, featuring a blend of experienced transfers and promising talent.
