Hyde, 51, was appointed as the Orioles’ manager prior to the 2019 season, tasked with steering the team through a comprehensive rebuild. Despite early challenges, Hyde’s tenure saw notable achievements, including a 101-win season in 2023, culminating in an AL East title and a playoff berth. His efforts were recognized with the American League Manager of the Year award that same year. However, the team’s performance has since declined, with a 91-71 record in 2024 followed by a lackluster start to the current season. Hyde departs with a cumulative managerial record of 421-492 and an 0-5 postseason mark. ([Camden Chat][2], [New York Post][1], [Reuters][3])

In a statement, Orioles Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating, “The poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility. Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.”  Elias expressed gratitude for Hyde’s contributions, particularly his role in revitalizing the franchise and returning it to playoff contention.([New York Post][1])

Team owner David Rubenstein echoed these sentiments, praising Hyde’s leadership and dedication. “Brandon Hyde is someone I have come to know and deeply admire, not only for his extensive knowledge of baseball but also for his exceptional leadership as a manager,” Rubenstein said. “However, as is sometimes the case in baseball, … .” ([New York Post][1])

Third base coach Tony Mansolino, 42, has been appointed as interim manager. Mansolino brings a wealth of experience, having managed at various levels in the minor leagues, including stints with the Lynchburg Hillcats and Akron RubberDucks. He joined the Orioles’ coaching staff in 2020 and is known for his energetic and disciplined approach to the game. ([Reuters][3], [Wikipedia][4])

The Orioles’ decision to part ways with Hyde comes amid a series of challenges, including injuries to key players and underperformance from the pitching staff. All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman, for instance, is batting just .214 this season. The team has also struggled offensively, with several players hitting below the Mendoza Line. ([Reuters][3])

In addition to Hyde’s dismissal, the Orioles have also parted ways with major league field coordinator and catching instructor Tim Cossins. Bench coach Robinson Chirinos will remain on staff. ([New York Post][1], [Reuters][3])

As the Orioles look to regroup under new leadership, the organization faces the challenge of reinvigorating a team that had high expectations entering the season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the managerial change can spark a turnaround and restore the team’s competitive edge in the AL East.
