Hoosier the Bison Returns Home to Indiana University

Bloomington, Ind. — May 28, 2025 — After capturing the hearts of Indiana Hoosiers near and far, Hoosier the Bison is finally returning to his original stomping grounds at Indiana University. The beloved mascot, known for his larger-than-life presence and spirited engagement with students and alumni, will officially make his homecoming at IU Bloomington this fall in a celebration that promises to be both nostalgic and forward-looking.

Hoosier the Bison was introduced in the early 2000s as a spirited symbol meant to bridge the university’s past with its future, although he was never an official replacement for the university’s “Hoosiers” nickname. Designed to embody the strength, resilience, and pride of Indiana, Hoosier the Bison quickly became a fan favorite—especially among students and younger alumni who appreciated the bison’s friendly yet powerful presence.

Despite his popularity, Hoosier the Bison was retired from regular appearances over a decade ago as part of a branding shift at IU. But in recent years, momentum grew for his return. Driven by enthusiastic alumni campaigns, social media petitions, and widespread nostalgia, the university’s spirit and traditions committee decided the time was right to bring Hoosier the Bison back.

“Hoosier represents more than just a mascot—he embodies the pride and energy of our university community,” said IU President Pamela Whitten in a press release. “We’re thrilled to welcome him home and reintroduce him as a symbol of unity, spirit, and strength for all Hoosiers.”

The return of Hoosier the Bison will coincide with several key campus and athletic events during the 2025–26 academic year. His first official appearance will take place during Welcome Week in August, where he’ll be reintroduced to students in a special pep rally at Memorial Stadium. From there, Hoosier will become a fixture at IU athletic events, student engagement activities, and community outreach programs.

To mark the occasion, IU is also launching a limited-edition merchandise line featuring Hoosier the Bison, with proceeds supporting student scholarships and campus spirit initiatives. The university has collaborated with the IU Alumni Association and the Office of Student Life to ensure that Hoosier’s return will be celebrated not just on campus, but across the state and beyond.

“This is about more than just nostalgia—it’s about embracing what makes IU special,” said Andre Wells, director of student involvement and leadership at IU. “Hoosier the Bison brings joy, excitement, and a real sense of connection to our community. His return signals a renewed commitment to fostering school spirit and celebrating our traditions.”

Students and alumni are already buzzing with excitement. Social media has lit up with photos of old Hoosier appearances, fan art, and stories from alumni who remember the bison’s first era fondly. For many, his return represents a comforting and inspiring continuity at a time when tradition and identity mean more than ever.

As Hoosier the Bison comes charging back into IU life, he does so with open arms from a university ready to embrace him—not just as a symbol of the past, but a mascot for the future.
