Indiana University (IU) has officially announced a transformative $698.4 million renovation project for Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, the legendary home of the Indiana Hoosiers men’s and women’s basketball programs. This historic investment is aimed at preserving the venue’s storied legacy while modernizing its facilities to meet the evolving demands of student-athletes, fans, and the broader university community.
Originally opened in 1971, Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is one of college basketball’s most iconic arenas, known for its steep seating, electric atmosphere, and passionate fan base. The upcoming renovation marks the most comprehensive overhaul in the building’s history and reflects IU’s commitment to maintaining its place among the nation’s elite athletic institutions.
“This renovation is not just about updating a building—it’s about investing in the future of Indiana basketball,” said IU President Pamela Whitten. “Assembly Hall has always been the heart of Hoosier spirit, and we are ensuring that future generations of athletes and fans experience that magic in a modern, world-class environment.”
The project includes major upgrades to nearly every aspect of the arena. Highlights include a reimagined lower bowl with improved sightlines and premium seating options, expanded concourses, new concession areas, upgraded locker rooms and training facilities, enhanced fan amenities, and cutting-edge technology integrations. A new glass atrium entrance will add aesthetic appeal and ease game-day crowd flow.
Importantly, the design will preserve the venue’s unique architectural features that have made it a beloved home court for decades. The famous steep seating design will remain intact, ensuring the same intimidating atmosphere that has helped IU secure one of the strongest home-court advantages in college basketball.
Athletic Director Scott Dolson emphasized that the project isn’t just about basketball. “Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is also a venue for graduations, concerts, and countless community events. This renovation supports not only our athletic mission but also the cultural and social fabric of Bloomington and the state of Indiana.”
Funding for the project will come from a mix of private philanthropy, athletics revenue, and long-term financing, with no impact on tuition or state funding. The university has already secured several lead gifts, and a capital campaign is underway to support the renovation’s full cost.
Construction is slated to begin in mid-2026 and will be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions during the basketball seasons. Full completion is expected by 2029.
