Shay Knighten Appointed Associate Head Coach at Oklahoma Sooners Softball

Norman, Oklahoma — [July 1, 2025]

In what is being celebrated across the collegiate softball world as a powerful blend of tradition, excellence, and full-circle legacy, the University of Oklahoma has officially announced the promotion of Shay Knighten, one of its most iconic alumni, to the role of Associate Head Coach for the Oklahoma Sooners Softball program.

This appointment marks not only a major milestone in Knighten’s burgeoning coaching career but also a pivotal moment for the Sooners as they enter a bold new chapter in their storied history — one grounded in sustained success, cultural continuity, and a return to the roots that made Oklahoma softball a dynasty.

THE HOMECOMING: AN EMOTIONAL RETURN TO NORMAN

For Knighten, this is more than just a job. It’s home. It’s destiny.

Having played under legendary head coach Patty Gasso, Shay Knighten returns to Norman not as a former All-American slugger but as a proven leader, experienced mentor, and rising force in collegiate coaching. The announcement was met with thunderous applause from fans, players, alumni, and national analysts alike, as the Sooners welcomed back a champion — not just of titles, but of character, culture, and commitment.

“Oklahoma raised me, and now I get to help raise the next generation of champions,” Knighten said in an emotional statement. “This program means everything to me. I’m proud, I’m ready, and I’m coming back to give it everything I have.”

A DYNASTY BUILT ON FAMILY AND FOUNDATION

The Sooners softball program has long been built on the values of family, grit, and generational excellence. Head Coach Patty Gasso, who enters her 31st season at the helm, has molded Oklahoma into a softball powerhouse that combines ruthless performance with emotional depth — a culture that Knighten thrived in as a player and will now help uphold as a coach.

“This is a full-circle moment for all of us,” said Gasso. “Shay represents the heartbeat of what Oklahoma softball is about. She played with passion, she leads with integrity, and she connects with players in a way that’s rare. She’s going to elevate us in every way.”

PLAYER LEGACY: THE CLUTCH QUEEN OF COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Before she was Coach Knighten, she was one of the most clutch hitters in NCAA softball history.

As a four-year starter for the Sooners from 2016 to 2019, Shay Knighten built a résumé few could rival:

2017 WCWS Most Outstanding Player, delivering a walk-off 3-run double against Florida in Game 1 of the finals and a go-ahead 2-run homer in Game 2.

2× NCAA National Champion (2016, 2017)

NFCA All-American Honors

Big 12 Player of the Year (2017)

Career Stats: .360 AVG, 247 hits, 42 HRs, 197 RBIs in 239 games.

She was the definition of “big-time player.” When the lights were brightest, Knighten delivered. Her legacy is still talked about in Oklahoma City and across Big 12 and SEC broadcasts. Few players in NCAA history have had such an impact in the postseason as Shay Knighten.

COACHING JOURNEY: FROM PRO STAR TO MENTORING MIND

Following her playing career, Knighten transitioned into the professional circuit with the USSSA Pride, helping them win the 2019 NPF Championship and mentoring younger athletes through clinics, camps, and ambassador programs.

But it was in coaching that she found her second calling.

2019-2020: Student Assistant Coach at Oklahoma

2020-2024: Assistant Coach at the University of San Diego

Responsibilities: Hitting, infield, recruiting, player development, fundraising, and travel coordination.

Accomplishments: Developed multiple All-WCC players, spearheaded offensive improvements, and helped the Toreros reach their first 30-win season in nearly a decade.

Knighten’s coaching style has been described as technical, passionate, and deeply relational. Her ability to connect with athletes — particularly young women — and balance high expectations with empathetic leadership has turned her into a rising star in the coaching world.

THE NEW ROLE: RESPONSIBILITIES AS ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

In her new role at Oklahoma, Shay Knighten will serve as Associate Head Coach with a primary focus on:

Offensive Strategy & Hitting Development

Infield Defensive Schematics

Recruiting & NIL Integration

Mentorship & Culture Building

Game-Day Decision-Making

She joins a stacked coaching staff that already includes:

Patty Gasso (Head Coach)

Jennifer Rocha (Associate HC – Pitching)

JT Gasso (Associate HC – Hitting)

Knighten’s addition not only deepens the staff but infuses the locker room with fresh perspective and emotional familiarity. For current players, she’s not just a coach — she’s a living legend, someone who has walked in their cleats, who knows what it takes to win on the biggest stages.

THE SOONERS’ NEW ERA IN THE SEC

With the Sooners recently completing their first full season in the Southeastern Conference, the timing of Knighten’s promotion could not be more symbolic. As Oklahoma shifts into an era of increased competition and national spotlight, her presence offers both familiarity and forward-thinking leadership.

In 2024, Oklahoma finished with a 59–7 record and reached the Women’s College World Series for the sixth consecutive year. But now, the competition only gets tougher in the SEC, with rivals like Florida, LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee chasing the crown.

Knighten’s appointment is viewed internally as a critical piece in staying ahead of the pack.

PLAYER REACTIONS: “A LEGEND RETURNS”

Current and former Sooners players flooded social media with excitement:

> “Shay Knighten is back! Nobody better to show us what it means to wear this jersey.” – Kinzie Hansen

> “Shay taught me to be a warrior in the box. Now she’ll teach a whole new era. So proud of her.” – Alo Jocelyn

> “She was our hero. Now she’s our coach. Let’s GO.” – Tiare Jennings

IMPACT BEYOND THE DIAMOND

Knighten’s return isn’t just significant for Oklahoma. It’s historic for softball — especially for the representation of Black women in high-level collegiate coaching.

She becomes one of the few Black women to serve as an Associate Head Coach at a top-5 Division I softball program, and perhaps the most decorated former player to do so in recent years.

Organizations across the sports and DEI landscape have already begun reaching out to Knighten for speaking opportunities and ambassador work. She is expected to be a centerpiece of Oklahoma’s new outreach initiative for underrepresented communities in softball, aimed at inspiring the next generation of women in sports.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: MORE THAN A PROMOTION

This isn’t just about filling a position. It’s about restoring a legacy, continuing a championship culture, and ensuring that the same values that built the Oklahoma dynasty — grit, unity, and belief — live on.

Knighten knows what it takes to win in Norman. Now she’ll teach others to do the same.

With her return, Oklahoma sends a clear message to the rest of the softball world:

> The dynasty isn’t fading — it’s only growing stronger.

Welcome back, Shay Knighten. The Home Run Queen is now the Coach of Queens. And Norman is ready for the next chapter.
